FAQ
What is it?
SmartStock is a project under development together with Professor Isabel Allen within the scope of the 12th Grade Chemistry subject. The same is authored by the students of Escola Secundária da Maia: Guilherme Viana, Iva Moutinho and José Francisco, students number 14, 16 and 21 respectively, from class 12ºF 2021/22.
What core problem are we addressing?
The problem we decided to address in the theme of Sustainable Development is irresponsible consumption. This problem is included in the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, specifically in point 12, “Sustainable Production and Consumption”.
Why address this topic?
We decided to approach this topic because we believe that our idea can revolutionize the way we consume. It is known by all that we are part of a consumerist society and that although this brings us some benefits, it also causes some problems such as irresponsible consumption and waste, which affect not only the planet but also our future. That said, and given the current state of the planet, it is imperative that young people like us start fighting aspects like these, in the fight for a more sustainable future, where future generations can thrive.
How do we think about approaching this problem?
Unbelievably, our approach to this problem is made from an application that monitors our consumption of products, mostly food.
What does the application consist of?
SmartStock is an application designed to make the population aware of the need to practice more sustainable consumption. The application not only allows you to control the goods that are purchased, but is also capable of creating a virtual list of products, according to the information obtained by scanning them at the time of purchase. In this way, you can easily monitor and have access to the products in question and their respective quantities. The application can help create more responsible and sustainable consumption, also eliminating the difficulties of organizing a realistic shopping list, which can be done through the same application.
And how will this application help sustainable consumption?
With the list of products to be dispensed on your mobile phone and by scanning the products you purchase, the user will be more aware of what he consumes, will have fewer headaches when making the next shopping list and will be more aware of what he needs to buy. . In this way, it will be possible to reduce the amount of products that you essentially do not need to buy, as well as waste, making consumption more responsible.
How do we think to build the application?
After some research we found an application creation software similar to MIT App Inventor called Kodular that has some advantages in the aesthetic customization of the application.
Why the name SmartStock?
We decided as a group and, after a brief reflection, that SmartStock was the name that would best reflect the particularities of our project. Smart, because we are providing a more responsible consumption, therefore more intelligent. Stock, therefore, comes from the English of storage, reflecting that the application is intended to monitor the products of your dispensation.
Why this choice of colors?
We chose the colors teal and orange because teal symbolizes calm and tranquility and orange symbolizes joy, something we want to convey to the user.
Do you have any partnerships?
We have a partnership with FCUP - Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto - where we have the help of professors Paulo Simeão Carvalho and Marcelo Dumas Hanh.
Are there any promotional videos for the Project?
Yes, they are on our youtube channel - yt link
